Using MSM to Repair Damaged Hair

Mehtylsulfonylmethane, also known as MSM is also known as organic sulfur. It is a supplement absolutely essential to repairing hair that has been stressed out by overprocessing, curling, bleaching, straightening and dying. It can be taken as a supplement, applied to the scalp or even added in powder form to your existing shampoos and conditioners. It is often found as an anti-wrinkle component in facial creams.

MSM is a rich source of organic sulfur. Organic sulfur to promote growth in any tissue in the body that utilizes keratin as a base and that includes your eyelashes, fingernails, toenails and your hair! It is not to be confused with the DMSO form of sulphur which cannot be ingested by humans but is often sold as cream to rub on arthritic humans and horses to relieve pain and inflammation.

Adding MSM powder to a water based hair conditioner may help repair dry, damaged hair shafts. Simply mix MSM powder in a cup of boiling water and then add your regular conditioner to it. Mix the conditioner into the liquid until it is well blended and then let it cool. Wash your hair as you normally would. Squeeze out any excess moisture from the strands and then apply the MSM mixture.  Leave this mixture on for about two minutes and then rinse with water. The colder the water is when you rinse your hair after this type of treatment the shinier it will be. Remember that MSM may aid in repairing damaged hair but you should not rely on it alone for hair regrowth.

You might also be able to find shampoos and conditioners in your area that already contain MSM. Sometimes you can find it in conditioner packs that are made out of volcanic mud.  If you live near a volcano or hot springs sometimes all it takes is a nice soak in a nearby hot springs to substantially improve the look of your skin and hair growth.

However many people find their hair is stronger and more lustrous if they take it in capsule form. It is not a toxic compound however if you take high doses of it for therapeutic hair repair then you need to be aware that it can thin your blood. If you take MSM you should also avoid taking nonprescription blood thinners like aspirin and prescription ones like Courmadin. High doses of vitamin E can along with high doses of MSM may also cause health problems.  MSM is also not generally used in combination with ginkgo biloba or the blood may become too thin.

So how do you know that you might have an MSM deficiency?  First of all your hair tends to look lousy’ brittle, dry and dull. It may be so dry that it is not even capable of really absorbing water. If you have this type of hair and also suffer from urinary tract disorders (like interstitial cystitis), inflammation, deep facial wrinkles and constipation you may be lacking in MSM.

There is no real drawback to treating your hair problems this way except that sometimes the product will have a bit of sulphur-like smell. However, as always, consider that are many fast hair growth products on the market that make extravagant claims. You should always consult a physician prior to dramatically altering your diet or taking vitamin supplements.
